Yamada Shokai HD invests in Terra Labs, which develops wide-area disaster systems using long-range unmanned aerial vehicles

2023.01.20 Venture Collaboration investment

Yamada Shokai Holding Corporation (headquartered in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture; Toyohisa Yamada, President), effective January 20, 2023,Terra Labs, Inc.("Terra Labs"), which subscribed for J-KISS type stock acquisition rights issued by Terra Labs.

Since its establishment in 2014, Terra Labs is a deep-tech venture promoting research and development of a "disaster response information system" that can collect three-dimensional data over a wide area using long-range unmanned aerial vehicles and link information with multiple organizations, including governments, public administrations, and infrastructure providers.

In March 2024, the company announced plans to mass produce the Terra Dolphin VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing), which will be able to take off and land without a runway in the event of a disaster and fly for more than 10 hours or 1,000 km. The Terra Dolphin VTOL has a light wing loading that enables stable flight at low speeds (100 to 150 km/h). Its high fuel efficiency enables it to acquire data over a wide area. At the time of a disaster, it records and analyzes the situation of the damaged area and information data on land undulations, and creates a "common situation map," a three-dimensional model of the changes before and after the disaster. By sharing this data with the relevant organizations, it can be used for on-site decision-making and prediction of secondary disasters. Based on the experimental model, a mass-production model aircraft will be redesigned, and mass production is scheduled to begin in 2025.

Japan is a disaster-prone country, and it is no exaggeration to say that its history is a struggle against disasters.
Yamada Shokai HD also continues to support gas restoration by going to disaster-stricken areas when disasters occur, such as the Isewan Typhoon in 1959, the Miyagi Offshore Earthquake (1978), the Kushiro Offshore Earthquake (1993), the Great Hanshin Earthquake (1995), the Niigata Chuetsu Offshore Earthquake (2007), the Great East Japan Earthquake (2011), the Kumamoto Earthquake (2016), and the Noto Peninsula Earthquake (2024). We continue to go to disaster-stricken areas to support the restoration of gas service. Yamada Shokai HD, which has been supporting lifelines such as gas and water in order to realize prosperous communities, has decided to invest in Terra Labs because it believes it is important to minimize damage, including secondary disasters, maintain livelihoods in the affected areas and promptly restore the communities.

In the future, through collaboration with deep-tech ventures working on disaster countermeasures and resilient community development, we aim to realize a community where people can live in abundance.
